Introducing Alex Ross - Award Winning DC Comic Book Artist!

Alex Ross is widely considered to be one of the most pre-eminent and well-respected comic book artists in the history of the field. Ross studied at the American Academy of Art, where he was influenced by the work of Salvador Dali, Norman Rockwell, Andrew Loomis and J. C. Leyendecker. It was here that Ross developed his ability to draw photo-realistically by eye – something his comic book art is now synonymous with. Praised for his life-like human depictions, Ross is often referred to as the “Norman Rockwell of comics” – bringing the characters he draws to life. This new collection from Alex Ross comprises six pieces that portray two of the most loved and well-established superheroes as you’ve never seen them before. Superman and Batman by Ross are at once a fitting tribute to iconic characters that many of us have grown up.Ross takes a medium traditionally equipped with two dimensions and gives it the illusion of a third; bringing a new perspective and style to comic book illustration that had never been realised in the genre previously. This treatment humanises these characters, they simply jump off the canvas as they become ever more believable.Take Superman, the first of the twentieth centuries ‘superheroes’, an all-powerful mythic brought into our realm to solve injustices and defend our defenceless. Ross takes the idea to the next logical step by rendering him in what appears to be actual flesh and blood.  With Batman, Ross takes him ‘lo-tech’, playing down the gadgetry and gizmos traditionally associated with this hero and instead enhancing the mystery, playing on what goes unseen, the dark nobility of a hero concealing his identity. Add to this the Alex Ross signature style of photorealistic interpretations with extreme lighting and angles, and you have a larger-than-life depiction of our favourite comic book characters, peeling back the layers so we see them as heroes and as people, ever more clearly. The collection is available as a paper portfolio, paper framed, boxed canvas or framed boxed canvas. The images of the collection are released on Thursday 26th June, (the pictures in this article give you an example of his style and a taster of what to expect). The collection is available to buy from Saturday 28th June.
