About Alexander Millar

Ayrshire-born Alexander Millar, one of the UK’s most loved and collectable artists, is a self-taught, contemporary impressionist artist whose work depicts the small wonder of the everyday. I was born in 1960 into the small mining community of Springside, a few miles outside the town of Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland. Life within the

small Scottish village was very traditional, and although I grew up in the 60s era, it felt more like the 40’s. My formative years were spent in the company of old men dressed in dark suits smoking woodbines partnered with large missile-shaped women decked out in headscarves and pinnies. Finding inspiration in the street drunk, the gossiping old ladies standing on street corners, the tired old guy wandering home after a long hard day at work, and the wee dog cocking its leg against the street corner, Alexander Millar is an internationally known, award-winning artist. Known most prominently for his series of Gadgie paintings and limited edition prints, Alexander Millar’s home and studio are located in Northumberland.“I was born in 1960 into the small mining community of Springside a few miles outside the town of Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland,” says Alexander, “my formative years were spent in the company of old men dressed in dark suits smoking woodbines partnered with large missile-shaped women decked out in headscarves and pinnies.”

Artist

The Artmarket Gallery has represented Alexander Millar for some years now. People tend to familiarise themselves with Alexander Miller’s art in a nostalgic, relatable sense, but some of his work oozes with romance. Alexander Millar calls himself “a big old fashioned nostalgic romantic,” and pieces such as ‘Time for Romance’ prove exactly that. As a self-taught artist, Alexander Millar spent years developing his style into what it is today. His childhood is a huge source of inspiration as Newcastle had, and still has, its fair share of characters locally known as ‘Gadgies’. “I am fortunate enough that the things I love to paint are right in front of my eyes every day. The hairs on my neck still stand on end every time I see an old ‘Gadgie’.”

“I always work in natural light, so there is nothing better than being able to sit outside, despite the cold, with a glass of wine, whiskey or something stronger like Earl Grey Tea with classical music playing in the background. It’s at times like this when inspiration kicks in and getting into a flow becomes easier – the subconscious takes over, and the painter and the painting become one.”
